Success isn't just about making the right decisions.
Imagine you decided to invest in a new business opportunity. You did everything with the information available, you researched, consulted experts, and decided to proceed.
But if the venture fails, it would make you feel it was a bad decision because of the outcome alone.
This happens because of "Resulting" or "Outcome Bias", where we judge decision quality based on the results or outcome and not how the decision was made.
Resulting happens when we judge decisions solely by their outcomes, ignoring the decision-making process.
Let us take another example
In hiring, for example, you might hire a candidate based on his qualifications and recommendations, but if they leave the company, resulting might make you doubt your decision.
It's the same in personal relationships. You might end a relationship after careful consideration, but if your ex-partner finds happiness elsewhere, resulting might cause you to question your choice.
Resulting distorts our judgment and undermines confidence in our decision-making.
So how to tackle Resulting?
To overcome it, focus on the decision-making process, consider all factors, and make decisions based on rational analysis rather than just outcomes.
